ARK: Survival Evolved Wiki

In order to ride on a dinosaur or creature, a Survivor needs to tame the animal they want to ride, after which they will need to equip it with the correct type of saddle.

Each rideable beast has a unique saddle that must be used to be able to mount it. Saddles will come in differing levels of quality and armor capability. Better quality saddles may be constructed using blueprints, or by finding them in supply drops or taken from dead bodies. Some creatures, including the Gigantopithecus, Direwolf, Angler, Manta, and Wyvern, do not require a saddle in order to be ridden. Certain creatures, including the Gallimimus, Tapejara, and Diplodocus, have a saddle that allows for multiple Survivors to ride the creature, while the Procoptodon can carry a passenger in its pouch. Certain large creatures, including the Paraceratherium, Brontosaurus, Plesiosaur, Quetzalcoatlus, Mosasaurus, and Titanosaurus, also have an alternate platform saddle that allow for the building of most structures on the creature's back while also functioning as a normal saddle. Certain creatures, including the Tyrannosaurus Rex, Mosasaurus, and Megalodon, also have a Tek saddle that provides better armor than a normal saddle and has Tek energy weapons that is obtained from defeating Bosses. The Castoroides and Thorny Dragon have a saddle that allows them to function as a mobile Smithy. The Equus has a saddle that allows it to function as a mobile Mortar and Pestle and craft a Lasso. Certain creatures, including the Mesopithecus, Jerboa, Kairuku, and Gigantopithecus, can equip a helmet as armor instead of a saddle.

As of early release, Survivors will not be able to perform mounted combat using weapons while riding in a saddle. Survivors can only use select items while mounted, including torch, compass, map, and GPS. However, Survivors riding a larger saddle such as the Brontosaurus, Tyrannosaurus Rex, or Quetzalcoatlus have the ability to stand on the dinosaur's back and use their weapons while the mount is driven by another Survivor.[1] Some saddles and creatures, including the Procoptodon, Gallimimus, and Diplodocus, now allow for the passenger to use weapons will riding in a saddle, or a pouch in the case of Procoptodon.
